The Icebound Land Book Review

Icebound Land book reviewI’ve been alternating between book club books, the stack of random books I’ve accumulated, and  reading the books my kids love. Today’s book review of The Icebound Land by John Flannagan falls into the last category. It is the third book in the young adult Ranger’s Apprentice series.

Kidnapped and taken to a frozen land after the fierce battle with Lord Morgarath, Will and Evanlyn are bound for Skandia as captives aboard a fearsome wolfship. Halt has sworn to rescue his young apprentice, and he will do anything to keep his promise – even defy his King. Expelled from the Rangers he has served so loyally, Halt is joined by Will’s friend Horace as he travels toward Skandia. On their way, they are challenged again and again by freelance knights – but Horace knows a thing or two about combat. Soon his skills begin to attract the attention of knights and warlords for miles around. But will he and Halt be in time to rescue Will? {Amazon}

My children warned me that this book has slower pace than the first two, which I agree with. It feels like a crossover book, getting us from book two to book four. We do see Will grow and face challenges in the first half of the book, along with Evanlyn, Halt and Horace. The second half of the book focus much more on the latter three. Despite the slower pace, the book does move the story forward and I enjoyed it. I give it four slices.
