Family Home Evening: Parable of the Laborers

Welcome to this week’s family home evening. I hope our family’s plans make your family’s a little easier.

Opening Song: Love One Another

Prayer

Scripture: 2 Nephi 32:3,5

Lesson: Parable of the Laborers

We started our lesson by reading Matthew 20:1-16. The question was asked “What is the moral of this parable?” I was surprised at how many different answers they gave. Wouldn’t you think one parable would have one meaning? I love that the answer is no. The gospel has so many layers so that it can lift you regardless where you are in your spiritual journey or what challenges you are facing. Here’s the morals our family came up with:Family home evening cupcake

  • You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit
  • The destination is more important than the process
  • Be happy for others’ successes
  • There’s a difference between venting or expressing frustration and getting blood boiling angry

Did you come up with any other meanings of the parable of the laborers?

We focused on being happy for others’ successes. We want to be more than just happy for others when they succeed, we want to celebrate. What’s the best way to celebrate? With a cupcake, of coarse! In the April 2012 General Conference, Elder Holland gave an awesome talk on this parable. I love his quote, “Furthermore, envy is a mistake that just keeps on giving. Obviously we suffer a little when some misfortune befalls us, but envy requires us to suffer all good fortune that befalls everyone we know! What a bright prospect that is—downing another quart of pickle juice every time anyone around you has a happy moment!” I don’t know about you, but I’d choose a cupcake over pickle juice at every celebration.

Activity: Hunger Games. We don’t generally watch movies for family home evening, but once in a blue moon we make an exception.

Closing Song: The Iron Rod

Prayer

Treat: Hello Dolly Bars

Friday Favorites: September 2

It’s Friday and a holiday weekend!  Woohoo!  What more could a girl ask for, except some 90 degree weather.  Oh well, two out of three isn’t bad.  I’ve already shared my favorites this week, a great book, a cute elephant, and a few more recipes on our Real Food blog.  Maybe I’ll get to do something other than homework this weekend and have some new things to share next week!  In the meantime, here’s some favorites from the blogosphere.

We might as well start off with the food.  It’s the perfect answer to a hectic week. (No wonder I have so much trouble losing weight.) I’ve always  wanted to try making Angel Food Cake from scratch.  My Favorite Recipes tells me how.

If you need a little chocolate, Your Cup of Cake hits the spot with these Peanut Butter Filled Chocolate Cupcakes.

Moving away from the sweets, I wonder how my kids would react to these Spaghetti Dogs from Polka Dot.  I might have to try them for lunch this weekend.

No more food.  Check out this cute tutu lamp from Apothecary Home; it totally matches the tutu table from Sassy Sanctuary.  Not that it fits anyone’s style in my house…

My “style” seems to be more in line with Room Mom 101.  I think I need to check out these tattle tale helps.

What are your big labor day plans?
