We had our first book club meeting last night. It was so much fun! Our group was small and informal, so it was comfortable. The best part was that a couple of my older kids decided to join in the fun.
We talked about how life on Guernsey is a microcosm of life in general. There are always those people who go out of their way to stand up for those who aren’t able to stand up for themselves, there are those who reach out to include others, and unfortunately there are those who bully and criticize. Just like anywhere else, the secret is to surround yourself with people who uplift and encourage.
Us older folks both seemed to be absent the day they taught about World War II in school. Neither of us knew that much about the German invasion. I can’t even imagine what it would be like to have an army invade my community and devastate my way of life. We wondered how we would act in that situation. Would we have thought all Germans were evil or would we see people for what they are besides their nationality.
Our conversation wasn’t limited to just The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. We compared it to parts of other books. Then we talked about even more books when we chose books for the next few months. I’m glad to have a couple of specific books to keep in mind.
And finally we finished off the night with something sweet. It seemed appropriate to share my favorite pie, Praline Pecan Chocolate Mousse Pie. I know you are shocked it wasn’t a potato peel pie.
